Organisation Of Actors

To make sure that I am able to create a good music video I am going to need to use good actors. Due to the scene of my music video being a wedding reception I am going to need a lot of background actors to make it look more realistic; because of this I am going to need to ask a lot of my friends to attend. The music video is mainly going to be focus on the Bride and the Groom to be able to tell the story.
I am going to use my friend Emily to be in my music video as the Bride and her boyfriend Charlie as the Groom.

I am using Faithful Friends to be in my music video as I can rely on them and will be able to tell them what it is I want them to do.

I am going to film my music video in one day meaning I will have to consider the Timings and how to use the time well to be able to get everything done.

The Outfits worn by the actors in my music video will be dressed in formal wear with nice hair and makeup as if they were attending a wedding reception. The Bride will be dressed in a wedding dress and the Groom will be wearing a suit.

As I will be filming in one day Hair will not be a major issue as if I was filming over a longer period of time I would have to make sure hair is the same and is not cut or dyed. I will just have to make sure that the hair remains the same and in place throughout the day.

The Mise en Scene of my music video will show that it is at a wedding reception, this will be shown by the clothes warn by the actors and the set up and props at the location. I am going to set out tables and have glasses, cutlery, drinks, food and decorations and fabric throughout the room to create a wedding reception environment. I will shortly be doing a test shoot to see the lighting in the room.

Throughout my music video the Lines/ Lyrics will relate to the music video and what is shown on the screen.

The Weather is not a huge concern as I will be filming inside throughout the duration of my music video.

I will also be looking at the Time Line.

Music Video Plan

I have listened to the music video over and over and thought about my ideas to create a plan of what I want to happen at each point in my music video.

(Italic text is song lyrics)

In every shot Charlie (groom) will be shown in the same shot as Emily (bride) unless stated; this will be done in a variety of angle and shot types including over the shoulder shots and point of view, between these I will use close up shots of Emily and Charlie to show what they are doing, body language and facial expressions. The video will be made and filmed in a function room that has been set up and decorated as a wedding reception. The room will have a top table against one of the walls, a dance floor area in the centre of the room and five or six tables around the outside.

0:00-0:20- Introducing the setting looking around the room at reception using a panning shot from starting at different points from one side of the room to the other.
Music Intro

0:20- Music fades ‘Ding Ding Ding’ glass tapping, Charlie makes and announcement medium long shot of head table whilst Charlie says ‘I’d like to thank everyone for coming and I hope you’ve all have a great evening,

medium long shot into an over shoulder point of view shot  Charlie says ‘I’d like to make a toast and looks at Emily sees she’s looking away, then looks at who she’s looking at (another man)

00:24- music starts again medium long shot of Charlie

00:24-00:47- speeches (Emily disinterested)
You and me, we made a vow
For better or for worse
I can't believe you let me down
But the proof's in a way it hurts

00:48-01:08- Kiss and walk off, Charlie goes to kiss Emily but she turns and walks off
For months on end I've had my doubts
Denying every tear
I wish this would be over now
But I know that I still need you here

01:09-01:34- Meet and Greets (Emily laughing joking)
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me baby
I know I'm not the only one

01:35-01:55- Picture pull away, Charlie takes Emilys hand to take a picture she takes the hand of her mother who takes her fathers hand to create a chain as they are walking to take a picture, Emily turns to face parents then walks away from Charlie.
You've been so unavailable
Now sadly I know why
Your heart is unobtainable
Even though Lord knows you have mine

01:56-02:18- Cake cut, cutting cake together Charlie looking at Emily lovingly, Emily looking at someone else in the room
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me baby
I know I'm not the only one

02:18 is the dimming lights empty dance floor both approach everyone sits down at tables/gathers round
Very short music section

02:20-2:44 dance together ending on Emily spinning out and letting go of Charlie’s hand
I have loved you for many years
Maybe I am just not enough
You've made me realize my deepest fear
By lying and tearing us up

02:46-03:06 Charlie alone on the dance floor staring straight ahead people moving and dancing around him
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me baby
I know I'm not the only one

3:06-03:29- panning around Charlie looking at people dancing around him ending on his face
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me hazy
I know I'm not the only one

03:29- camera on Emily then over shoulder shot looking at Charlie sad and alone, face saddens
I know I'm not the only one

03:30:03:41- Emily walking across the dance floor to Charlie (different types of tracking)
I know I'm not the only one
I know I'm not the only one

03:42-03:52- Emily takes Charlie’s hand smiles then begins to dance
And I know, and I know, and I know, and I know, and I know, and I know, know
I know I'm not the only one

03:52-03:58- Both kiss, people stand around clapping throw confetti, confetti balloons pop, smiling

Music Video Ideas

I have thought about what it is I want to do for my music video; this has included thinking about the song, the lyrics and referring to the feedback I received about what people think about the song.

I myself have listened to the song multiple times to see what I think and have looked at the lyrics to give me an idea of what I want to do.

I have decided that I want to use a wedding themed music video set at a wedding reception after the couple have got married. My idea is that the music video is going to show how the Groom feels about his Bride showing the audience an idea that he loves her and is glad he married her although he doesn't completely trust her. As I mentioned in a previous post I am going to use a Narrative type of music video to tell this story and to get the point across.
Throughout the song in the music video key points will be happening including toasts, cutting the cake and the first dance; at each of these points the Groom is going to look at the Bride to see that she is distant, looking elsewhere and interacting with everyone but him.

I am considering slowing down the video so that it gives the same feel as the song does and is in time with the lyrics.

Feedback Results

I have collected the results of my questionnaire where I asked around 30 people in my target audience of teenagers aged 14+ what they think of the song using brief words. I have collected this information and put it into a Wordle to show my findings.

Song Feedback

I have created a brief questionnaire with a couple of questions to ask a group of people within my target audience of teenagers aged 15+. I am going to have these people listen to the song and ask them three questions about their ideas and how they have interpreted the song and the lyrics.
The three questions I am going to ask are:
-What is the first word you think of when you hear this song?
-What do you think of when you hear this song? (think about the lyrics)
-What would you expect to see in the music video

This is so that I am able to see what they think and what their ideas are so that I can use them to help me when I am planning and making my music video.

Copying Letter

In order to be able to use the song I Know I'm Not The Only One by Sam Smith I am going to have to ask for permission from the label that owns the song.
To enable me to do this I researched into who the label is that owns the song; I did this by searching 'I Know I'm Not The Only One' into google where I found a Wikipedia link to the song, on this page I found that the song is owned by Capitol Records.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I'm_Not_the_Only_One

I then did further research into Capitol Records to make sure that they did own the song which they did. I was unable to find contact information for Capitol Records through looking on their website and searching on Google. I found an email address for Capitol Records on http://www.discogs.com/label/654-Capitol-Records but when I attempted to sent a Copyright letter through the email it was unable to send as the email was incorrect.

I then researched further into Capitol Records and found that and found that their parent company is the Universal Music Group. I looked on their website to find contact information and an email that I could send a message to to request permission to use the song.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitol_Records
http://www.universalmusic.com/company/faq

Under the frequently asked questions section I found an email I could use to ask permission; this email was  communications@umusic.com

I sent an email to them asking permisson to use their song; below is the email I sent along with the response I received.

After receiving this email I followed the steps they provided on what to do next; this meant going onto the Universal Music Puplishing Group under the licensing tab then contact them via the email provided on the page to ask for permission.
To make sure that they are able to understand my request I added some more information to the first Copyright Letter I sent so that they can understand what it is I am going to do.

I am currently waiting for a reply to confirm I have permission to use the song for my music video.

Final Song Choice

I have thought about my options and have chosen to use Sam Smith- I Know I'm Not The Only One as my final song choice. In my feedback some people did prefer the other song due to it being more upbeat and a different style although I did still get positive feedback on the Sam Smith song.

I have also chosen to use this song as I feel I have better Ideas of what to do for my music video. For example due to the style and tone of each song I would have used a performance piece for Crazy Stupid Love whereas I am going to use a Narrative piece for I Know I'm Not The Only One. I think that by doing this I will be able to create a better music video.

Song Choice Feedback

I have asked some people to listen to both songs and tell me what they think of each and which they prefer. I have given them information on my task, my genre and my target audience.

I used a messenger app called Kik to do this as it was easy to use.

Cheryl Cole vs Sam Smith

It is important for me to think carefully when choosing the song; I have considered using either Cheryl Cole- Crazy Stupid Love or Sam Smith- I Know I'm Not The Only One. This is because I like both of these artists and the songs, to help me to make the decision I am going to ask some people to listen to both and ask them which song they prefer.

Choosing a Song to Use

In order for me to be able to make my music video I have to select a song to use; this decision has to be made carefully as it will effect my ideas of a music video and what I am able to do. The song I chose will also affect what type of music video my song will be.
I know that the song I am going to use is going to be from the Pop Genre as this is the genre I have chosen and am most interested in.
During my research and analysis of music videos I looked at different types of music video and songs that were faster and slower.

Research into Pop

Pop is one of the largest and most sucessful genres in the music industry. Due to the range of music in the Pop genre there are a avariety of Pop artists from different backgrounds and genders at a variety of ages.
Pop is a modern style of music that is constantly bringing out new songs with different styles. Pop music provided a range of music and can bring in different genres inclduding rock and country. Most well known and common radios including Kiss Fm, Capital and Heart often play a large majority of Pop music as this is a style of music that can appeal to a wide target audience due to the versatitilty of the style of music.

Target Audience

The target audience of my music video is going to be teens and young adults aged 14-24. I have chosen this target audience as I believe that it will be easy to connect to due to being in the target audience myself. This is also the target audience of most music videos in the pop genre.

Chosen Genre

From the begin of this task I knew that I wanted to use Pop as the Genre of my music video. I have chosen pop as this is the music genre I am most interested in, I also believe that pop is one of the largest genres in the music industry with a variety of current pop artists. Because of this I think that I will be able to access a variety of types of pop music videos that will help me when creating my music video.
I also feel that I will be able to perform better with pop as my music genre as most pop music is aimed at the target market I am within.

Types Of Music Video

Every music video will fall into one of three categories. These types of music video include Performance, Narrative and Concept based videos.

Performance based videos
A performance based video is focused on the performance of the person/s singing in the video. Throughout a performance video the singer/singers are shown on camera performing the song, in this type of video there is a set or have a very small variety of locations. Performance based videos are less expensive to produce as they are likely to not use multiple locations, props and effects due to the style and simplicity of the video. Performance music videos use a range a range of camera angles, this helps the performer to interact with the audience which makes them interested in the video.
This is an example of a Performance based music video Released 3rd November 2013

Narrative based videos
Narrative based music videos have a purpose of informing the audience, this is done by telling the audience a story within the music video. Some narrative based videos have the performer in the video as part of the story whereas other videos have actors telling the story whilst being accompanied by vocals and sometimes clips of the performer.
This is a Narrative based video Released 16th June 2009

Concept based videos
A Concept based video uses a main theme and idea throughout the duration of the music video. In a concept video there is no/ minimal range of how the camera is used and the way the video has been edited after the filming process. In a concept music video the lyrics of the song played in the video are often irrelevant to what is happening in the video.
Example of a Concept based video Released 14th June 2013

Music Video Analysis

In order to gain an understanding of music videos I am going to look at a few from a couple of genres. I am currently considering making a video from the Pop genre, because of this I am going to analyis two differnt types of music videos from the Pop genre and one from another music genre. The first music video I am going to be analysing is That Bass by Meghan Trainor The second music video is Stay With Me by Sam Smith The third music video is If I Could Change Your Mind by Haim The first and second music videos are from the Pop genre, the third music video is from the Indie Rock music genre.

Changing Ideas

I have recently been thinking about the task I have been set; my first thought was that I would prefer making a film trailer and not a music video due to having more ideas in film trailers at the time. I have considered my options and after thinking about the available genres I could use I have decided that instead I would like to create a music video. I knew initially that I did not want to create a horror trailer so had to consider an alternative, after considering what I could do instead and starting to research by viewing music videos I realised that creating a music video would be more suitable and although at first I thought I would struggle with ideas but I believe that by researching into music videos and genres this will allow me to develop my ideas further allowing me to produce a good music video.
