Uploading videos

I am still unable to upload my videos; because of this I am going to put my videos onto a CD so that they can still be seen.

As well as this I am going to try other websites where I may be able to upload easier allowing me to put them directly onto my Blog as well.

First Two Minutes

I am now finishing the second minute of my music video; I have put together the next section of my clips taking me up to two minutes.
I have kept the black and white element that I used before as I believe it creates a memory type feel. I have slowed down almost every clip to a slower speed to give it the ghostly memory feel. I feel that doing this is effective as it also makes the video more suitable for the song as the song is slow.

Upload problems

Unfortunately I am having problems with my laptop at the moment; the Wifi I am using is unreliable as is struggling to be able to upload my videos to YouTube. The size of the video file is also very big meaning that when I am trying to upload updates of my video it is taking a very long time to process and is failing around half way through.

I am going to speak to my teachers about my problem so see what they advise; I will continue to try to upload though.

First Minute Changes

I have continued to add effect to my music video; I have added a sharpen filter to some of the videos to make them sharper as some were blurred in areas. I have also added a black and white filter effect as I feel that it looks more effective and fits with the theme of the song.

First Minute

I have just finished putting together the first minute of my music video;

I have started by putting in a few options of clips that I want to use in my video so that later on I can move them around. I am trying to follow the my previous plan so that I am able to stick to the storyline I created so that I am able to tell a clear story in my video.

Premier Pro

I am now starting to use Premier Pro again after playing about with some of the features so that I can practise and see what I can use when I'm editing my video.

I asked about using it and now know what I need to start editing my video so from now I am going to be using Premier Pro.

I have decided to start the Premier Pro project on my laptop so that I am able to do it as often as I can rather than having to rely on using the school computers.

Movie Maker Draft

This is a short clip I made of my video on Movie Maker to give me an idea of putting the clips together.

Premier Pro problems

Now that I am starting to bring together my clips I need to start to make an actual video. I am having problems using Premier Pro as I feel like I don't know how to use it properly; I am going to start putting together some clips on Windows Movie Maker just to give me an idea of what order I am going to put my clips in.
I am going to speak to my teachers about using Premier Pro but unitl then I am going to use Movie Maker.

Makeup

I filmed a video of Emily showing the makeup she wore in my music video. I filmed her showing the products and techniques she used to achieve the makeup look she wore in my music video.

I will put this video on the CD with the rest of my videos .

Reviewing footage

Looking through my footage I can see that I have a large choice of clips to use; in my previous post I mentioned that I had over 200 videos although as I have started to look through them I have found that quite a few of them are out of focus and that I also have a lot of bloopers :)

Here are some examples of clips I would and wouldn't consider using in my video;

I'm likely to use this video as the lighting is good and the shot is in focus.

If I was going to use this video I would have to cut it down as the start is good but the end isn't.

Although the lighting and camera focus in this shot is good I won't be able to use it in my video as they both laughed :)

Footage

I have got over 200 videos that I will be able to use for my music video; having a large amount of footage will allow me to put them together and take the parts I like to put into my music video. Having a large amount will allow me to use many different clips meaning that I will be able to use many different camera angles and shot types in my music video.

Clothing

These were the outfits worn by my actors in the video:

Emily wore a Wedding Dress made by her sister Alice who is studying __ at uni; as you can see by the hoop in the image above the dress was originally huge as it had been made for a fairy-tale dress purpose based off of the dress warn by Giselle in Enchanted. Emily tried on the full dress as shown in the picture below but it was far to big so I altered it based on the material we had from the dress!! :)

These are some pictures of Charlie and Emily together; as you can see in the images above Charlie wore a Blue Suit. I chose these outfits as I believe that it represented well that they were a bride and groom.

Filming day 2

Yesterday I filmed for the second time; I used multiple locations to film and was able to get multiple different shot types and angles that will be very useful for me to use when I start to edit my video and put it all together.

I started the filming at a golf club where I was given permission to drive into and film in the car park; these shots will later be used to show the Bride and Groom arriving at the reception venue. Here I recorded the car with Emily and Charlie in it multiple times with each camera to make sure that I had enough footage to be able to chose which I liked later on.
I then filmed Emily and Charlie getting out of the car and walking towards the building, I did this many times from different angles with both cameras to get both up close and further out views.
Information on the cameras and equipment used can be found later on a separate blog post.

From the golf club we then drove to the registry office; I used this time to film inside of the car again with different camera angels including having both of them in the same shot by holding the camera and turning and also up close shots of Emily and Charlie to show a more personal up close shot to review their facial expressions.

When we arrived at the registry office I went inside and met the people there to introduce myself. They were all very helpful and showed me which rooms I was able to use. I then filmed Emily and Charlie leaving the registry office, getting into the car and driving off multiple times before going inside to film in one of the rooms.
I filmed Emily and Charlie leaving the room where the environment they are in implies they've just got married walking out of the door and to the front of the registry office building. This was done multiple times using different camera angles to make sure that I have enough footage to edit later on.

I am now going to start looking back through everything I have filmed to determine which footage I can use then start to put it together in the editing process.

Preparing to film again

I have confirmed with the registry office that the date for me to film their is going to be on Friday the 31st of October. Between now and then I am going to make sure that I have everything I need to be able to film; this includes making sure I have the right equipment such as cameras, memory cards and a tripod. I am also going to arrange for someone I know to drive into the registry office so that I am able to film the car leaving the registry office and my actors inside of the car. I am planning on doing this as I feel that it will make my video seem more realistic and will add another filming location; I also hope that by filming in a car I will be able to show the distance between my actors as although they will be sat together I am going to direct them to be disconnected and looking out of the windows.

I have made sure that the actors are going to come as they did to my last day of filming including having the same hair, makeup and clothes.

I know what it is I need to film and what I have already filmed but I have not yet looked at what I have previously filmed in detail as I am going to wait until I have filmed for the second time as they may be some parts that I can use that will be useful that I may have originally thought I would not need.

Filming Review

Today I filmed for the first time, all together with setting up, filming and packing everything away took me most of the day from around 8:30am to 5:00pm so I am glad that I adapted my plans to film on different days in separate locations or I wouldn't have been able to get everything done I needed to.
I started by laying out tables to get an idea of the space I had and where I would like to set up cameras to film. I then began dressing the room with table cloths, plates, knifes and forks, drinks and wedding decor including confetti and small decorations to make the room look like it could be from a wedding reception setting.
The set up took most of the time as I had to transform a blank room; below are images of the room I used. As you can see I set up tables and chairs with a blue theme colour; I decorated with little bottles, confetti, candles and wine bottles and glasses to make everything look real. I also made a wedding cake that I look some close up shots of to go in my video. The first image shows the lighting box I used for lighting in the room including a spotlight.

View of the tables and Chairs in the room.

 The top table.

Some of the tables (please excuse the Lucozade bottle :')!!)

 Emily in her dress.

Charlie and Emily

I then began to start filming using test shots but was unsure of the lighting; I had closed all of the blinds and curtains in the room to give it a nighttime feel to later show progression throughout the video from the start to the end of the wedding day but I felt that the lights in the room were not bright enough. I then found a light stand with various lights including a spot light that I could use to make the room brighter and the shots better.

From here I began to film close up shots of Emily and Charlie (main actors) that I could use later on in my video so that I will be able to show multiple shot variations and as I thought it would be a good use of time whilst waiting for everyone else to arrive.

This is an example of one of the close up shots I took; I am very happy with the lighting I used and the video quality I was able to get.

Once everyone else had arrived I then began to film the rest of my footage including the Bride and Groom walking into the reception, cutting the cake and the first dance. As I had decided to use two cameras I was able to position them in different places; this will allow me to chose the best shots and combine the footage I have later on when I look at all of the footage I have and begin to edit my video.

Overall I feel that today was successful and that I know need to make sure that I am prepared for my next filming day to make sure that I record everything else I need to be able to make my video.

Filming day 1

Today is the first day of my filming I am going to spend the first half of the day setting up the room and begin filming in the afternoon.

I will post again later on today reviewing how my first day of filming went.

Actors

Charlie and Emily are the actors in my music video as the Bride and Groom. I chose to use Emily and Charlie as I know that they are reliable and would be willing to help me by being in my video.

I also chose to use them as they are a couple so I felt that they would be able to show chemistry on screen and in my video that wouldn't come across or be the same if I had decided to use people who weren't in a relationship.

As well as Charlie and Emily I am also going to be using other people for my video so that I am able to create and represent a wedding reception environment. Most of the people will be aged 17-18 representing young adult characters but I am also hoping to be able to film some adults to make the scene more realistic.

On the left are some images of Charlie and Emily together.

Email Response

Luckily the registry office were able to respond swifty to the email I sent them allowing me to begin the process of using the location for filming.

The person I spoke to asked me to provide contact information so that they could call me so that I could make sure that we were both clear on what it is I wanted to use the venue for. After speaking to someone on the phone I was given full permission. I had originally discussed filming on October 27th but then this date didn't work with my actors so I asked for another date.

I then had to find a date that was suitable for the venue, myself and the actors in my video. I had a date in mind but then found that the actors were unable to do this day so I emailed back asking for the days and times they had so I made sure that I chose one suitable for everyone then booked it so that I could use it for my filming. This is the email response with the dates and times they had available.

I asked for October 31st as this worked best for everyone; I then received a final email from them where they told me what to do when I arrived and who to speak to. I made sure to reply saying thank you for their help with assisting me.

Getting ready to film

I am now going to spend the next couple of days preparing to film the first part of my video. I am going o film on Monday 20th October meaning I have the next couple of days to prepare. I have permission to use the filming location and my two actors have confirmed that they are both available on the day as well as other background actors that are going to be in the video.

Later on today I am going to be going to Hobbycraft to by the props for my video including table cloths, confetti and candles.

I am preparing by making sure I have memory cards allowing me to film throughout the day I am going to be using a new 16gb memory card and bring another 8gb as a spare; I will make sure that I have charged the camera battery and bring the charger with me to make sure that I have camera battery throughout the day.

Filming Timeline

In order to be able to complete this task within the time provided I need to make sure I have time to edit my music video properly. I will need to make sure I have completed the research and planning section as well as filmed my music video within a certain timescale to be able to begin creating my music video, DigiPak and complete my Evaluation.

Permission Email

In order for me to be able to use the location I want for my music video I am going to have to email the Sidcup Manor House to ask them for permission to film.
I searched for the Sidcup registry office on google and found page with a contact email.

I sent an email to the contact email I found telling them who I am and what it is I want to do:

"Hello my name is Lauren Turell, I am a student a Chislehurst School for Girls (Beaverwood) studying Media Studies in my second year of A Levels. As part of my media coursework I have to create a music video and will be using the song I Know I'm Not The Only One by Sam Smith, I am going to be using a wedding theme for my music video.
I was wondering whether it would be ok for me to use the outside of the Sidcup Manor House as a location for part of my music video. Doing this will consist of me filming my actors acting as a bride, a groom and a few people stood outside of the Manor House as if they are walking out of the building, throwing some confetti and getting into a car and driving off. Doing this should take me no more than an hour and I hope for this to happen at some point during the week begining 27/10/14, at a time that is most suitable for you.

I would really appriciate your help and hope to hear from you soon.
Lauren Turell."

Finding a suitable location

I am going to need to find a sutiable location to film a section of my music video; as it is going to need to portray a wedding venue I have considered churches and buildings in my local area that would be suitable.

There are two possible churches I could use and a manor house.

This St Lawrences Church in Sidcup, I considered using it as a possible location due to the large open space at the front.

St Johns is another Church in Sidcup I considered using although I don't like that it is on the corner of a road and it's surroundings, this would make it difficult to film people outside the front as I would have to be positioned in the road to be able to film. I also don't like that the front of the church has gravestones as I feel it would ruin the effect of the wedding theme.

My third option is Sidcup Manor House; it is a registry office located in Sidcup with trees and bushes in the front making it more private and seperateds it from the road. The Manor House looks grand from the front and is a place where weddings do take place meaning that it would be a suitable location for me to film outside.

I have decided that the Manor House will be most suitable for part of my music video; I am going to look for contact information for the Manor House so that I can ask for permission to film.

Adapting Plans

Now that I am getting closer to filming my music video I am thinking about how much I will need to do and whether I am going to be able to do it. I had originally planned to film my entire music video in one day in one location. Having thought about how much I am going to need to film I am not going to be able to film everything in the time I have in one day. In order to be able to overcome this problem I considered going back another day to continue filming but this would mean having to spend time setting up the room and space I have and making sure that everything is exactly how it was. Although this is not impossible I feel that this would be more difficult and time consuming so I am going to use different locations instead. I will continue to use my wedding theme but now instead of having my music video set at only the reception I am now going to film leaving the wedding venue, travelling to the wedding reception venue and then at the wedding reception. This will give me more time to film and will also allow me to use different locations and environments as well as many camera angles. My Music video will now also have more of a story and timeline as it is a  narrative piece as now the audience will be able to see the progression between leaving the wedding venue and arriving at the wedding reception giving them more of an understanding of what is going on.

Hair and Makeup

I want to make sure that the people in my music video look good and that they don't look underdressed or scruffy. I am going to ask my actors to wear makeup and have their hair nice either down or in an updo as they would if they were going to a wedding reception. I am going to ask the boys to make sure that they do their hair for the event so that it doesn't look scruffy in the video.

Below is a moodboard of the types of hair and makeup I want for the actors in my music video.

Save the Date

To make sure that I have enough people in my music video I am going to create a Facebook group event inviting and asking people to come.

The event will provide information on what it is I am doing and when the music video will take place and for how long. I will also provide information on dress code and guidelines on hair and makeup.

This is the Facebook event I created, I will add more people to the event later on once I know who is and isn't available to come.

The about section on the event says:
"Hi Guys, some of you may already know I need to make a music video for my media coursework. I am going to be using the song I Know I'm Not The Only One by Sam Smith, the theme of my music video is a wedding reception where the song is representing how the group feels and that even though he loves and has married the bride he doesn't trust her.
The Bride is going to be Emily and the Groom is going to be Charlie.
I am going to need as many of you that can come to be the guests; you will just have to act like you are at a wedding reception . The dress code is smart/formal.
Girls please wear dresses and heels.
Boys please wear suits, trousers and shirts.
This will be on Monday 20th of October from 3pm onwards.
I will give you the information on where it is and how to get there later.
If you have any questions let me know, please get back to me asap!!
THANKS GUYS

Ps. You can bring your partners and add friends to the event to come but please ask me first, the more people the better!! thank you"

Costumes

I am going to be filming my music video in one day at one location, I want my music video to represent a specific moment in time rather than at multiple locations with outfit changes over a larger period of time.

The costumes that are going to be warn my my actors are what would be expected to be warn to a wedding reception. For example this will include party and formal wear.

I am going to ask the female actors to wear dresses and heels as if they were attending a wedding reception.
I am going to ask the male actors to wear suits, shirts and smart trousers and shoes also as if they were going to a wedding reception.

The Groom in my music video is also going to be wearing a suit with smart shoes and the Bride is going to be wearing a wedding dress and heels.

Once I have finalised the actors in my music video I will ask them to send me pictures of the clothes
they are going to wear for the music video to make sure that they are what I want and suitable for the video.

Filming Location

I have thought about where I am going to film my music video, when considering the location I will think about the size of the room, the lighting and what I am going to put in the room to make it suitable for my music video.

As I have already mentioned my music video is going to be a Wedding Reception setting; because of this I am going to need a suitable location for this and that uses Mise en Scene to get across to the audience the narrative and point of the music video.

I thought about using a hall for my music video but realised that a hall would be too big and would take too much time to dress the room to make it suitable and is too big to fill with people and props.

I have decided to use a function room for my music video as it will be a suitable size for me to use allowing me to fill and dress the room with props and people making it look like a lively Wedding Reception during filming.

I will shortly upload pictures of the location I am going to be using for my music video.

Organisation Of Actors

To make sure that I am able to create a good music video I am going to need to use good actors. Due to the scene of my music video being a wedding reception I am going to need a lot of background actors to make it look more realistic; because of this I am going to need to ask a lot of my friends to attend. The music video is mainly going to be focus on the Bride and the Groom to be able to tell the story.
I am going to use my friend Emily to be in my music video as the Bride and her boyfriend Charlie as the Groom.

I am using Faithful Friends to be in my music video as I can rely on them and will be able to tell them what it is I want them to do.

I am going to film my music video in one day meaning I will have to consider the Timings and how to use the time well to be able to get everything done.

The Outfits worn by the actors in my music video will be dressed in formal wear with nice hair and makeup as if they were attending a wedding reception. The Bride will be dressed in a wedding dress and the Groom will be wearing a suit.

As I will be filming in one day Hair will not be a major issue as if I was filming over a longer period of time I would have to make sure hair is the same and is not cut or dyed. I will just have to make sure that the hair remains the same and in place throughout the day.

The Mise en Scene of my music video will show that it is at a wedding reception, this will be shown by the clothes warn by the actors and the set up and props at the location. I am going to set out tables and have glasses, cutlery, drinks, food and decorations and fabric throughout the room to create a wedding reception environment. I will shortly be doing a test shoot to see the lighting in the room.

Throughout my music video the Lines/ Lyrics will relate to the music video and what is shown on the screen.

The Weather is not a huge concern as I will be filming inside throughout the duration of my music video.

I will also be looking at the Time Line.

Music Video Plan

I have listened to the music video over and over and thought about my ideas to create a plan of what I want to happen at each point in my music video.

(Italic text is song lyrics)

In every shot Charlie (groom) will be shown in the same shot as Emily (bride) unless stated; this will be done in a variety of angle and shot types including over the shoulder shots and point of view, between these I will use close up shots of Emily and Charlie to show what they are doing, body language and facial expressions. The video will be made and filmed in a function room that has been set up and decorated as a wedding reception. The room will have a top table against one of the walls, a dance floor area in the centre of the room and five or six tables around the outside.

0:00-0:20- Introducing the setting looking around the room at reception using a panning shot from starting at different points from one side of the room to the other.
Music Intro

0:20- Music fades ‘Ding Ding Ding’ glass tapping, Charlie makes and announcement medium long shot of head table whilst Charlie says ‘I’d like to thank everyone for coming and I hope you’ve all have a great evening,

medium long shot into an over shoulder point of view shot  Charlie says ‘I’d like to make a toast and looks at Emily sees she’s looking away, then looks at who she’s looking at (another man)

00:24- music starts again medium long shot of Charlie

00:24-00:47- speeches (Emily disinterested)
You and me, we made a vow
For better or for worse
I can't believe you let me down
But the proof's in a way it hurts

00:48-01:08- Kiss and walk off, Charlie goes to kiss Emily but she turns and walks off
For months on end I've had my doubts
Denying every tear
I wish this would be over now
But I know that I still need you here

01:09-01:34- Meet and Greets (Emily laughing joking)
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me baby
I know I'm not the only one

01:35-01:55- Picture pull away, Charlie takes Emilys hand to take a picture she takes the hand of her mother who takes her fathers hand to create a chain as they are walking to take a picture, Emily turns to face parents then walks away from Charlie.
You've been so unavailable
Now sadly I know why
Your heart is unobtainable
Even though Lord knows you have mine

01:56-02:18- Cake cut, cutting cake together Charlie looking at Emily lovingly, Emily looking at someone else in the room
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me baby
I know I'm not the only one

02:18 is the dimming lights empty dance floor both approach everyone sits down at tables/gathers round
Very short music section

02:20-2:44 dance together ending on Emily spinning out and letting go of Charlie’s hand
I have loved you for many years
Maybe I am just not enough
You've made me realize my deepest fear
By lying and tearing us up

02:46-03:06 Charlie alone on the dance floor staring straight ahead people moving and dancing around him
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me baby
I know I'm not the only one

3:06-03:29- panning around Charlie looking at people dancing around him ending on his face
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me hazy
I know I'm not the only one

03:29- camera on Emily then over shoulder shot looking at Charlie sad and alone, face saddens
I know I'm not the only one

03:30:03:41- Emily walking across the dance floor to Charlie (different types of tracking)
I know I'm not the only one
I know I'm not the only one

03:42-03:52- Emily takes Charlie’s hand smiles then begins to dance
And I know, and I know, and I know, and I know, and I know, and I know, know
I know I'm not the only one

03:52-03:58- Both kiss, people stand around clapping throw confetti, confetti balloons pop, smiling
Music fades out

Music Video Ideas

I have thought about what it is I want to do for my music video; this has included thinking about the song, the lyrics and referring to the feedback I received about what people think about the song.

I myself have listened to the song multiple times to see what I think and have looked at the lyrics to give me an idea of what I want to do.

I have decided that I want to use a wedding themed music video set at a wedding reception after the couple have got married. My idea is that the music video is going to show how the Groom feels about his Bride showing the audience an idea that he loves her and is glad he married her although he doesn't completely trust her. As I mentioned in a previous post I am going to use a Narrative type of music video to tell this story and to get the point across.
Throughout the song in the music video key points will be happening including toasts, cutting the cake and the first dance; at each of these points the Groom is going to look at the Bride to see that she is distant, looking elsewhere and interacting with everyone but him.

I am considering slowing down the video so that it gives the same feel as the song does and is in time with the lyrics.

Feedback Results

I have collected the results of my questionnaire where I asked around 30 people in my target audience of teenagers aged 14+ what they think of the song using brief words. I have collected this information and put it into a Wordle to show my findings.

Song Feedback

I have created a brief questionnaire with a couple of questions to ask a group of people within my target audience of teenagers aged 15+. I am going to have these people listen to the song and ask them three questions about their ideas and how they have interpreted the song and the lyrics.
The three questions I am going to ask are:
-What is the first word you think of when you hear this song?
-What do you think of when you hear this song? (think about the lyrics)
-What would you expect to see in the music video

This is so that I am able to see what they think and what their ideas are so that I can use them to help me when I am planning and making my music video.

Copying Letter

In order to be able to use the song I Know I'm Not The Only One by Sam Smith I am going to have to ask for permission from the label that owns the song.
To enable me to do this I researched into who the label is that owns the song; I did this by searching 'I Know I'm Not The Only One' into google where I found a Wikipedia link to the song, on this page I found that the song is owned by Capitol Records.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I'm_Not_the_Only_One

I then did further research into Capitol Records to make sure that they did own the song which they did. I was unable to find contact information for Capitol Records through looking on their website and searching on Google. I found an email address for Capitol Records on http://www.discogs.com/label/654-Capitol-Records but when I attempted to sent a Copyright letter through the email it was unable to send as the email was incorrect.

I then researched further into Capitol Records and found that and found that their parent company is the Universal Music Group. I looked on their website to find contact information and an email that I could send a message to to request permission to use the song.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitol_Records
http://www.universalmusic.com/company/faq

Under the frequently asked questions section I found an email I could use to ask permission; this email was  communications@umusic.com

I sent an email to them asking permisson to use their song; below is the email I sent along with the response I received.

After receiving this email I followed the steps they provided on what to do next; this meant going onto the Universal Music Puplishing Group under the licensing tab then contact them via the email provided on the page to ask for permission.
To make sure that they are able to understand my request I added some more information to the first Copyright Letter I sent so that they can understand what it is I am going to do.

I am currently waiting for a reply to confirm I have permission to use the song for my music video.

Final Song Choice

I have thought about my options and have chosen to use Sam Smith- I Know I'm Not The Only One as my final song choice. In my feedback some people did prefer the other song due to it being more upbeat and a different style although I did still get positive feedback on the Sam Smith song.

I have also chosen to use this song as I feel I have better Ideas of what to do for my music video. For example due to the style and tone of each song I would have used a performance piece for Crazy Stupid Love whereas I am going to use a Narrative piece for I Know I'm Not The Only One. I think that by doing this I will be able to create a better music video.

Song Choice Feedback

I have asked some people to listen to both songs and tell me what they think of each and which they prefer. I have given them information on my task, my genre and my target audience.

I used a messenger app called Kik to do this as it was easy to use.

Cheryl Cole vs Sam Smith

It is important for me to think carefully when choosing the song; I have considered using either Cheryl Cole- Crazy Stupid Love or Sam Smith- I Know I'm Not The Only One. This is because I like both of these artists and the songs, to help me to make the decision I am going to ask some people to listen to both and ask them which song they prefer.

Choosing a Song to Use

In order for me to be able to make my music video I have to select a song to use; this decision has to be made carefully as it will effect my ideas of a music video and what I am able to do. The song I chose will also affect what type of music video my song will be.
I know that the song I am going to use is going to be from the Pop Genre as this is the genre I have chosen and am most interested in.
During my research and analysis of music videos I looked at different types of music video and songs that were faster and slower.

Research into Pop

Pop is one of the largest and most sucessful genres in the music industry. Due to the range of music in the Pop genre there are a avariety of Pop artists from different backgrounds and genders at a variety of ages.
Pop is a modern style of music that is constantly bringing out new songs with different styles. Pop music provided a range of music and can bring in different genres inclduding rock and country. Most well known and common radios including Kiss Fm, Capital and Heart often play a large majority of Pop music as this is a style of music that can appeal to a wide target audience due to the versatitilty of the style of music.

Target Audience

The target audience of my music video is going to be teens and young adults aged 14-24. I have chosen this target audience as I believe that it will be easy to connect to due to being in the target audience myself. This is also the target audience of most music videos in the pop genre.

Chosen Genre

From the begin of this task I knew that I wanted to use Pop as the Genre of my music video. I have chosen pop as this is the music genre I am most interested in, I also believe that pop is one of the largest genres in the music industry with a variety of current pop artists. Because of this I think that I will be able to access a variety of types of pop music videos that will help me when creating my music video.
I also feel that I will be able to perform better with pop as my music genre as most pop music is aimed at the target market I am within.

Types Of Music Video

Every music video will fall into one of three categories. These types of music video include Performance, Narrative and Concept based videos.

Performance based videos
A performance based video is focused on the performance of the person/s singing in the video. Throughout a performance video the singer/singers are shown on camera performing the song, in this type of video there is a set or have a very small variety of locations. Performance based videos are less expensive to produce as they are likely to not use multiple locations, props and effects due to the style and simplicity of the video. Performance music videos use a range a range of camera angles, this helps the performer to interact with the audience which makes them interested in the video.
This is an example of a Performance based music video Released 3rd November 2013

Narrative based videos
Narrative based music videos have a purpose of informing the audience, this is done by telling the audience a story within the music video. Some narrative based videos have the performer in the video as part of the story whereas other videos have actors telling the story whilst being accompanied by vocals and sometimes clips of the performer.
This is a Narrative based video Released 16th June 2009

Concept based videos
A Concept based video uses a main theme and idea throughout the duration of the music video. In a concept video there is no/ minimal range of how the camera is used and the way the video has been edited after the filming process. In a concept music video the lyrics of the song played in the video are often irrelevant to what is happening in the video.

Music Video Analysis

In order to gain an understanding of music videos I am going to look at a few from a couple of genres. I am currently considering making a video from the Pop genre, because of this I am going to analyis two differnt types of music videos from the Pop genre and one from another music genre. The first music video I am going to be analysing is That Bass by Meghan Trainor The second music video is Stay With Me by Sam Smith The third music video is If I Could Change Your Mind by Haim The first and second music videos are from the Pop genre, the third music video is from the Indie Rock music genre.

Changing Ideas

I have recently been thinking about the task I have been set; my first thought was that I would prefer making a film trailer and not a music video due to having more ideas in film trailers at the time. I have considered my options and after thinking about the available genres I could use I have decided that instead I would like to create a music video. I knew initially that I did not want to create a horror trailer so had to consider an alternative, after considering what I could do instead and starting to research by viewing music videos I realised that creating a music video would be more suitable and although at first I thought I would struggle with ideas but I believe that by researching into music videos and genres this will allow me to develop my ideas further allowing me to produce a good music video.

Trailer Analysis

In order to gain an understanding of what is needed for and what is used in a film trailer I am going to do research into film trailers and complete analysis' of film trailers.

Three of these trailers will be from my current genre of Rom Coms

The other three trailers will be from a different genre.

Introduction

Hello my name is Lauren Turell, I am currently starting A2 Media. This is the blog where I will be posting all of my coursework for my Media A2 course, this will include research, planning, production, feedback and evaluation.

Last year I completed my first year of A level Media, my task was to first create a school magazine that would be used as a preliminary task; after this I had to create a music magazine. During the process of creating my music magazine I learnt the importance of research and asking opinions on what people think, I also found that it is important to plan as this gives a structure of what needs to be done and by when to help get things done. During the production process I found that it is helpful to update my blog with what I am doing and when so that I am able to show progression and development. In the final stages of completing my AS course work during feedback and evaluation I picked up points on how to progress and improve my work and performance in the future. In order to complete my AS coursework I had to learn to use programmes including Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign and learn how to use a Digital SLR Camera.

This year for my Media A2 coursework I have been given the option to create either a music video or a film trailer. I decided after being told about the task that I would prefer to do a film trailer and not a music video; one of the reasons for this was having to perfect the lipsinging in the music video with the song I chose, I also felt that I would be able to perform better creating a film trailer as I am more interested in the varied types of film trailer genres and the conventions they use as apposed to a music video. I also decided quite early on that I did not want to create a horror trailer although this was recommended as a large percentage of people choose to create a horror trailer due to the conventions being easier to follow.
I am going to research further into the types of film genres and which I can use to base my film trailer off of; at this current point in time I am considering creating a Rom-Com trailer.
Part of this process is going to be editing the videos I filmed so that I am able to complete my film trailer. In order to gain an understanding of the programme I am going to be using to do this an to practise I have been set a task to complete a clip titled 'The Package'.
The package is a 2-5 minute clip where two people meet and exchange a package. For this task I worked with my friend Emily Brown where we set our package clip in a train station.
To edit the clip we used Windows Movie Maker and Adobe Premier.
I found this task useful as it allowed me to practise filming to meet a brief using a variety of shots and practise using the software.
